Our brains are in control of the actions that we take mentally, but its tissues and lobes do far more than just that. The brain handles the impulses from your entire nervous system, and has dominion over each and every body part, enabling you to move. For this reason, the brain has long been the subject of many studies, theories and investigation, not the least of which is why and how we can create a mental image without meaning to.

The brain typically will generate mental images which might not be relevant to the situation at hand. This mental imaging is more likely than not to show up in any classroom, as the student tunes out the teacher’s voice and brings his/her self to another place – forming what is known as a daydream.

Another example of this is imagination, which might happen on purpose, or even spontaneously. So many young girls put themselves in an imaginary place as a princess complete with all the pieces that apply to that role. Visualization is another form that is represented by being able to ‘see’ a picture or object in one’s “mind’s eye”. For those people who can visualize an image it is as if that thing/person is right besides them, and if they are able to do it voluntarily it can be used along with relaxation therapies to get the person into an even deeper state of calm.

In the medical world, this technique is used to help bring greater relief from stress and/or anxiety-related disorders with tremendous success. Many things are now available, such as Human Touch HT-125 Robotic Chair, which have shown favorable results in the area of relaxation and relief of stress.

Techniques such as biofeedback, meditation, yoga, and forms of body and mind control have worked very well with different individuals. In investigating the various techniques one will find that they actually work on the premise of self-hypnosis, which is often called mental imaging. When you transform your mind into an empty vessel and focus on one particular object, prayer, phrase, or some type of mantra which enables you to escape the reality of your situation, you will be able to find heightened levels of relaxation and tranquility. It is a method of self-hypnosis in which one is able to remove the cares of the day and relax to the state of being near euphoria.

Mental images can occur on a regular basis, sometimes daily, however one becomes so used to it that they no longer give it a second thought. Thinking thoughts which bring scenes to the mind, such as a memorable event or a happy occasion, takes one’s mind from the present to the past or the future. When reading a book some people experience the book as well, they are so drawn into what the author has said that they can picture it in their mind.

Ideally, you will learn techniques to benefit your body and mind which eliminate the desire for chemical medications. Some people, in trying these techniques, do not allow enough time to reach the goal they are seeking. You can only achieve success by practicing and repeating these techniques. Some of these programs take only a few minutes two or three times a day, while others may take half an hour or more. The technique of utilizing a mental image works very well especially when used in conjunction with some form of meditation.

Doctors, therapists and psychiatrists all make the argument that the brain controls many, if not all, of the problems that occur with the body, and that the stresses and anxieties that are related to these things can be helped with mental imaging. Since we already know that nerves reach to every part of the body, it is clear that any activity that the brain may have should result in some physical discomfort. Unfriendly interactions with people or bad days at work can cause very bad headaches and fatigue. Because of this realization several different strategies for achieving relaxation and freedom from related aches and pains have been introduced. Fortunately, there are experts in this area, as well as group sessions, which have been very successful in assisting people seeking this type of relief from their problems.
