Hemorrhoid Treatment – The Natural Way
October 22nd, 2009Conventional vs Alternative Treatment
The 3 traditional medical management goals of hemorrhoid treatment include relieving the symptoms, arresting the worsening of the condition and preventing the recurrence of the condition. The old adage that prevention is better than cure is well-known. Accordingly, we would add pre-emptive prevention of the onset of hemorrhoids.
Established medicine dictates 4 stages of assessment; immediate admittance to hospital where cancer is highly probable, possible admittance where there is severe pain (e.g. thrombosed external hemorrhoids and internal but thrombosed and prolapsed hemorrhoids), outpatient treatment (e.g. grades 1 or 2 hemorrhoids); intensive investigation (e.g. where conditions other than hemorrhoids is suspected).
Many people are comfortable going along this conventional path of hemorrhoid treatment. Nothing wrong with that, especially if it has been of help to them. We are not total skeptics of the big pharmaceutical companies and hospitals alternative as they do typically provide good medical soltuions. However, conventional drugs often have side effects that we may not be apprised of even by the best of doctors as they truly believe that the cure is the main immediate goal.
Consequently, our approach has always been to examine alternative treatment together with conventional medicine. This is especially so if the alternative solution is a natural way that has been tried and tested by fellow sufferers, including those who have already undergone tradtional medical treatment. One such alternative to hemorrhoid treatment is the H Miracle.
Conventional and alternative treatments aside, there are a variety of DIY routines that you can practise to prevent hemorrhoid affliction. These same measures become even more important if you are already suffering from it. They will lessen your distress and prevent worsening of the condition.
Healthy Living as a Lifestyle
Cultivate this simple lifestyle habit – the balanced diet! An undeniable truth, though clichéd it may sound.
Excessive straining due to constipation, something which most of us simply dismiss as part of life, is a major cause of hemroids. Correspondingly, a critical lifestyle objective should then be to achieve regular bowel movements consisting of bulky and soft excrement. This is very easily attained by including in our daily diet just 30 gm of insoluble fiber found in fruits and leafy vegetables. Add to that 8 glasses of fluids. Fluids, despite our hopes, exclude those with alcohol and caffeine content!
The balanced diet normally works fairly rapidly. But if your bowel demands are very urgent, you may also take plant-based fiber supplements. Methyl cellulose (extracted from vegetables) is very effective. Sold under trade names like Citrucel or WillPowder, it passes through the intestines undigested and absorbs large amounts of water to produce a bulkier but softer stool. Another high fiber supplement is psyllium which is made from the seeds of the Indian plant Plantago ovata. Sold under the brandnames Metamucil and Fybogel, psyllium acts similarly to produce bulky soft stools.
Regardless of whether you are already suffering from hemorrhoids or is recovering from hemorrhoids after customary medical procedures, the daily objective of a properly-balanced diet is an important step in your hemroid treatment and recovery.
Helping Yourself at Home
For those currently agonising from hemorrhoids, the following perianal hygiene methodology should become second nature. Perianal alludes to the tissues around the anus. After passing motion, these are essential steps to note:
• Do not use with perfumes or dyes
• Avoid rubbing the anal region
– use the shower or bidet to clean
– pat dry gently with a towel
• Blot dry the anus with
– damp toilet tissue
– baby wipes
– pre-moistened towelettes e.g. TUCKS Medicated Pads
– cleansing agents e.g. Balneol Hygienic Cleansing Lotion.
For pain and itch relief in hemorrhoid treatment, try one or all of the following:
• Apply ice (10-minute duration) a few times a day
• Alternately apply a warm compress (10-20 minute duration)
• Apply moist heat (using warm towels – tip: use a microwave) several times a day
• Soak the anal area in warm water (15 minute duration) a few times a day
• Take a sitz bath (i.e. warm tub of water with a tablespoon of salt added)
• Apply hemorrhoidal creams or petroleum jelly (e.g. Preparation H)
Other relief methods:
• Rest in bed – alleviates pressure on the inflamed hemorrhoids
• Refrain standing or sitting for prolonged periods
• Minimise lifting heavy things
• Wear loose cotton underwear to reduce moisture formation
• Do NOT use the famed doughnut ring cushion – by restricting blood flow, it magnifies swelling!
• Exercise regularly – just brisk walking is fine too
• No matter how busy you are, discharge your bowels as soon as the urge occurs.
Self-help is an integral part of hemorrhoid treatment. However, this is a VERY IMPORTANT NOTE. Whenever any of the medicinal products mentioned above are used for hemroid relief, you should seek the advice of the pharmacist at the drugstore where you make your purchase or your personal physician. This is especially if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, urination difficulties caused by prostate gland enlargement or you are recently taking any prescription drugs.
