Parenting The Strong Willed Child is Exhausting!
January 31st, 2010My wife and I have truly experienced the pleasure of parenting the strong willed child! Since our son was born into this world he began facing the horrible struggles of a cruel world. His biological mother unfortunately was addicted to cocaine, meth, alcohol, and you name it. Not a great way to start off life!
Our little boy came into our home at the young age of just three months old having already spent the first three months of his little life trying to go through cocaine withdrawals. Many grown adults can’t with stand the pain and hell of doing that and our son had to do it before he experienced anything else in life. Yes there was something within him that he was determined to be the strong willed child that he grew up to be!
Perseverance is something you must have if you’re parenting the strong willed child! I have a lot of experience with perseverance since I spent twelve years in the United States Marine Corps. Quitting is not in my vocabulary! The strong willed child within me had to show my father that I could not only make it through Marine Corps Boot Camp but graduate in the top 10% of my platoon! So I know a little about the strong willed child.
The first few years as our son was growing up it appeared that everything was pretty much normal. At least in the beginning! But hind sight is always 20 20 when you look back in time. After raising four children, my wife and I now know there were a lot of differences between the strong willed child and our other three. The word “NO” did not register for him at all. It always took a physical effort to stop him from whatever his mind was set on.
We got our first sign at what challenges his life would be filled with when he was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of six. The good news was that now there was a reason we thought for his behavior. When the doctor prescribed Ritalin we thought to ourselves great! He will take this little pill and presto he will be a normal little sweet child and our life will go back to normal. Not so fast! Yes he was calmer but the strong willed child within him still remained and more determined to press on.
We needed to find something else to help us with the challenge we faced of controlling our son! It was almost embarrassing for us to admit we didn’t know what to do! Here we were two mature adults with two children and we didn’t have a clue on how to handle the strong willed child that GOD have delivered to us!
We began to desperately look for help anywhere and we didn’t care where! We searched the Internet and read what we could! We sought out child psychologists for answers. We found out that he was a very gifted child which we already knew, and that only made us feel guilty. We finally got help and I talk about that on my website, while also providing a large amount of personal stories!
Being the parent of the strong willed child gives you a right to hold the title of parent extraordinaire. There is nothing tougher than raising the strong willed child. One of the keys that you must be able to do is model good behavior, especially when they are young. My wife and I thought if we were louder and more aggressive than our strong willed child it would work. How wrong we were. It just made him more determined! No kidding!
Don’t fail your strong willed child. Seek out the help you need and the longer you put it off the harder it will become. There are great programs out there that are very effective, and trust me we have looked into a great deal of them. You can end up spending thousands of dollars trying to find a solution but keep in mind there are some very reasonably priced programs that can be purchased right on the Internet that work.
