Work was starting to be too frantic for a young police officer named Gary. Even though he had only been on the police force for four-and-a-half years, he was already known as a hard worker who rarely said no to working overtime. In reality, he was now working fifteen to twenty hours of overtime each week and, as a consequence, he felt like he was losing his grip on his personal life. What made the situation more complex, however, was the fact that Gary began going out drinking with a bunch of his fellow officers after his shift was over.

What Began as Fun Soon Became Irresponsible and Hazardous Drinking

What began as fun with the guys very soon turned into abusive and unhealthy drinking and then into a negative cycle of feeling tired every morning when he got up for work, working more long hours, and then going drinking with his buddies after work.

Plainly Gary was in a health related and psychological rut and going through some adverse alcohol effects on the body. Where Gary really observed alcohol related difficulties and alcohol short term effects, however, was in his family life and in his marriage. His wife wasn’t really a complainer, but she frequently asked him to stay at home more with her and with the kids rather than going through all of his money while drinking with his friends.

Gary’s Excessive and Irresponsible Drinking Negatively Affects His Personality

In a similar manner, Gary’s unhealthy and excessive drinking also adversely affected his personality. Simply put, the more heavily he drank, the less patience he had with any issues or problems that emerged concerning his wife or his children.

It Was Apparent to Gary That His Irresponsible and Unhealthy Drinking Was Negatively Affecting His Work, Health, Relationship With His Family, and His Pocketbook

In his heart of hearts, it was apparent to Gary that his unhealthy and abusive drinking was negatively affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health. So one Thursday afternoon Gary decided to talk to Jerry, a trusted old police officer buddy that he greatly admired.

Gary mentioned to Jerry how careless and excessive drinking was negatively affecting his work, pocketbook, relationship with his family, and his health. Jerry told Gary that he totally understood because around six years ago, he too got involved in excessive and careless drinking. Indeed, Jerry mentioned to Gary that excessive and irresponsible drinking can cause so many difficulties in an individual’s life that just about everything of significance can be ruined. And lastly, Jerry recommended that Gary make an appointment with an alcohol counselor at the work-affiliated substance abuse rehab facility.

Since his employee’s assistance program was affiliated with this rehab center, it was not only quite convenient but also very affordable to obtain treatment about his abusive and hazardous drinking. And since the personnel at the chemical dependency rehab clinic was supportive, non-judgmental, and competent, Gary would be able to get alcohol treatment that made sense to him and something he could follow through on.

After talking to his counselor about how his drinking was ruining his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health, Gary understood that he was burning the candle at both ends with his crazy work hours and his hazardous and excessive drinking. Once he comprehended that he was getting himself into a rut, with the help of his psychologist, and after fourteen weeks in therapy, he was at long last able to quit drinking and stop working overtime.

Due to His Alcohol Rehabilitation Gary Felt More Healthy and Had Much More Energy

The result was that Gary perceived life in a different way now that he was in alcohol recovery. To be more specific, due to his alcohol rehabilitation he not only noticed that he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, but he was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, he felt better and more healthy, and he had more quality time to spend with his family. Strangely enough, now that he quit drinking, Gary and his wife were not only starting to save some money for a new house but he also felt more alert and more energized than anytime since he and his wife got married.
