Ways to Prevent Allergy Attacks
August 23rd, 2009When the spring and fall seasons roll around, this is the time that most people dread because they know that they are at risk for their allergies acting up. If you look around most drug stores or convenience shops- or even turn on your television- you’ll notice that there are more drugs on the market now than there were a decade ago and all of them treat allergies.
From Claritin to Nasonex, it seems that there is an option for everyone. While these medications all claim to do pretty much the same thing, the only differences between them are their supposed side effects on the people who take them. For instance, ever since I moved from out-of-state to North Carolina, I have had bad allergies. When I went to see the doctor about my problem, the doctor prescribed me Claritin (this was before Claritin was made available over the counter). I took the Claritin, and the symptoms immediately subsided. However, in the place of my allergy symptoms, I noticed that my air/nasal passages were completely dried out to the point where my nose would bleed. It was uncomfortable- more uncomfortable than having the allergies, so I decided to stop taking Claritin.
Today, I simply rely on Tylenol Severe Allergy. Not only is it significantly less expensive than some of the other “wonder drugs”, but it clears up my allergy symptoms just the same. Other people will tell you that Benadryl works wonders, but beware of allergy medications in general because a lot of them have side effects that will make you extremely drowsy. While there is a seemingly endless amount of medication readily available to help you with your allergy symptoms, there are also plenty of other things that you can do on your own to help alleviate and even prevent allergy attacks from happening. For instance, if you have a choice in the matter, always opt to live in a space that has hardwood floors or a non-carpeted surface. Carpeting not only traps smells and is more difficult to clean, but it is a huge trap of major allergens such as dust, dander, mold, pollen and more.
If you have pets, make sure that they are groomed outside of your living space-preferably outside on a patio or at a grooming salon. If you cannot do either of these options, simply make sure that you groom your pet in a separate room from where you sleep. If you do have carpeting (for instance, most apartments come with carpeting), make sure that you periodically have it deep cleaned and/or make sure that you vacuum regularly (at least 2-3 times a week). When you do vacuum, make sure you are doing it right before you have to go somewhere. The worst thing you could do for your allergies is vacuum and then stay inside because when you vacuum, you’re stirring up all of the dust, pollen and other allergens. It’s a recipe for disaster!
While carpeting seems to be one of the major culprits with allergies, there are also other things such as smells that can trigger allergy attacks. When I go to yoga classes, there is a friendly reminder sign posted on the door asking guests to refrain from putting on fragrant colognes, perfumes or creams prior to coming to class. The reason for this is that there are certain people who are extremely sensitive to fragrances. Not only is this a common courtesy to others, but it is something that you should be conscious of anyway. The best way to smell good is to shower! Allergies can be a pain, but they don’t have to be if you take the proper precautions.
